The Imaginarium is a place where gifted girls are encouraged to develop their gift and their interests through various opportunities. The Imaginarium runs courses for girls at Perth College both during school and after school, in addition to external girls through after school and holiday courses.
Our first profile of an Imaginarium participant is from Perth College. Elise is in Year 6 and currently participates in the Global Problem Solvers course. She is an exceptional artist, with her illustrations featuring animals and mythical creatures such as dragons. Elise writes creatively with emotion and a mature perception of complex topics. Her interests lie in drawing, reading, writing and playing the piano. Elise enjoys the Global Problem Solving course when problems are broken down into parts and rich discussions evolve around different perspectives.
Elise has a few ideas about what she’d like to do when she’s older. ‘An artist, an author or a geologist,’ she asserts. With her keen interest in rocks, she reads a lot of books about them and finds it really interesting how hard rocks are and what streak they have. ‘It’s how you tell fool’s gold from gold,’ she explains.
Elise’s favourite book at the moment is one she has just finished called, ‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness. ‘It’s an interesting and sad story,’ she asserts. ‘What makes it interesting is that it’s mysterious and all is not as you expect it to be.’
Elise is also passionate about turtles. She really likes how they swim and wants to protect them from endangerment. Elise is so passionate about their survival she donated her pocket money and birthday money to help protect the turtles .
Some of Elise’s drawings can be viewed in the slideshow below.
